Pregnancy massage can reduce stress, decrease swelling in the limbs, improve sleep, and bring relief to aches and pains in muscles and joints when options for pain reduction through medication are often limited.
Some massage techniques should not be applied during pregnancy and, in addition, certain areas of the body should be avoided.
Women with certain conditions may not be able to receive pre-natal massage. It is especially important for a potential massage recipient to be thorough with medical information on the intake form when pregnant.

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) – Is a massage technique that helps ‘reboot’ the lymph system to perform its job of removing excess fluids from the body’s tissues. This is a recommended therapy when someone is experiencing edema- (excess fluids beneath the skin)- that can have a variety of causes, including surgery or prolonged sedentariness. It can also help promote drainage when a client is experiencing sinus congestion. MLD is a very light technique performed rhythmically and in a particular pattern, which has proven to be effective in promoting lymph circulation. It can be applied to the entire body or to a specific area, incorporating it with other massage modalities.
Trigger point therapy focuses on “knots” or sensitive areas in the fibers of a muscle that can refer pain to other areas of the body. These trigger points can develop after injuries, overuse, or poor ergonomics. Increased range of motion and pain relief are primary goals of this massage modality.
Fascia is the connective tissue that surrounds entire muscles and individual muscle fibers, in addition to the bones, nerves, and organs of the body. Restrictions in the fascia can put painful pressure on nerves and
muscles. Long, deep, stretching strokes applied manually or with various therapeutic tools (see Cupping and Gua Sha) release these restrictions, balancing the tissue, and therefore relieving pain.
